Learning to play music should be fun. I'm passionate about that. It's my responsibility to provide lessons that are not only enjoyable but also cater to your individual needs and learning style.

I constantly reassess and rewrite my teaching material and methods rather than relying on "How to play..." books. I also write lessons based around songs or styles that each individual wants to learn. I have a huge list of songs too, all arranged in skill order so you can pick and plan what you'd like to play.
Most students begin by taking the Bruton Music Lessons grade route. I've used my training and experience as a syllabus writer to create a series of guitar grades which either match or exceed the standards set by many of the famous pop and rock grading schemes. These are fun, balanced and crafted to help with playing now but also laying foundations in the future. You even get a certificate after you pass the exam!
I have taught kids as young as 5 and adults of all ages. I probably spend the biggest portion of my time teaching beginners (adults and kids!) but have also helped tweak the skills of gigging musicians. Here are some of the things I specialise in.
I can teach a variety of styles and genres. In the past I've taught traditional electric/ acoustic rhythm guitar, lead guitar (taking in blues and jazz) slide guitar, acoustic fingerpicking and song writing.
The Bruton Music Lessons grade system aims to get you playing guitar, properly and impressively, quite swiftly. I estimate it takes a couple of lessons to get to song playing stage. Everything you learn in this system is relevant to real music and real musicians.
Most of my students enjoy modern and classic rock, blues, modern and retro pop and folk. For example I could be teaching Bob Marley, Dylan, the Stones, Hendrix and Pink Floyd one day and then Adele, Ed Sheeran, Fallout Boy, Taylor Swift and Royal Blood the next. I'm very experienced teaching beginners but also intermediate players- advanced skills like fingerpicking, open tunings, modes and soloing over changes are things I've taught in the past.

...He quickly established a rapport with the children who respected and genuinely liked him; they were all very sorry to see him leave... Leweston Prep School (Guitar, 2010)"

...You will be sadly missed. You have been a great asset and the children and young people have benefited from your skilled and personable style of teaching..." Yeovil Music Centre (Guitar, 2010)

"Mike Taylor provided a weekly guitar tutorial slot for my young people's column while working as a reporter for the Blackmore Vale Magazine and also taught me guitar via lessons and group sessions. His knowledge of and passion for his subject really comes across during his lessons and his relaxed, patient teaching style means you can learn the songs you want to know at your own pace." About Mike

I first fell in love with guitar, like a thunderbolt, when listening to Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower. I was relatively late starting guitar at 18 years of age but worked hard and by age 20 had been accepted into the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) to study Professional Musicianship.
Here I not only learned an incredible amount about guitar and music theory in general but was encouraged to learn other instruments, specifically drums and bass guitar. This has proved invaluable not only for my teaching but in song writing and filling in on recording sessions and gigs. I achieved a first in the Music Teaching module and I'd later go on to use the dissertation in future jobs writing syllabus for other teachers as well as a series of instructional books which were sold around the world.
My live experience has taken me from the smallest Somerset pubs to beach bars in Thailand, I've felt lucky enough to play festivals where some of my favourite artists were billed. I've recorded at some nice studios in Brighton but tend to record my own stuff "home studio" style which has been played on regional radio.
I play acoustic guitar and Weissenborn guitar with The Elusive Bright. I primarily play slide guitar (various tunings and types of guitar including Lapslide and Resonator) with Barefoot Badger. You can also hear my electric and sometimes acoustic guitar playing with Storied.
As a musician I try and listen to anything for a bit of inspiration but there's no denying I love blues and jazz! Oh and I'm a massive Hendrix fan. Here are a few artists from different genres that I like, in no particular order: Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Tommy Emmanuel, Zoe Keating, Ratatat, Penguin Cafe, Battles, Herbie Hancock, Derek Trucks, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, John Mayer, Miles Davis, Pink Floyd, RATM, RHCP, Sly and the Famly Stone, TCV, Brian Bromberg, Guthrie Govan, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Captain Beefheart... I'm sure I've missed some gems but you get the idea!

I teach from my home in Bruton and am unable to do home visits. I have driveway parking and parents can sit in on lessons should they wish.
